Violence has once again erupted in Plateau State as at least 40 people were killed in a midnight assault on Zike community in Bassa Local Government Area on Monday.

The latest bloodshed comes less than two weeks after a separate massacre in the same local government area, where terrorists left at least 52 dead.

Despite repeated assurances from the federal government to end the senseless killings and restore calm, the cycle of violence and reprisals shows no sign of abating.

According to community leader Wakili Tongwe, the attackers stormed Zike village in the early hours, opening fire indiscriminately on defenceless residents.

Tongwe revealed that his vigilante team, along with security personnel, had been patrolling a nearby community when the assailants struck.

“By the time we rushed back to the village, the attackers had already killed 36 people. Sadly, four more who sustained critical injuries later died,” he said.

Survivors with injuries have been evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care, while the community reels from yet another devastating blow.

Residents are once again calling on authorities to urgently intervene and bring lasting security to the region, which has become a flashpoint of relentless attacks and reprisals.
