The Federal Government is set to launch a national flood awareness campaign in May 2025 to sensitise Nigerians about looming flood threats and precautionary measures.
Mr. Kunle Awojemila, Deputy Director of Flood, Erosion Control, and Coastal Management at the Ministry of Environment, revealed the plan on Sunday.
He explained that the campaign will commence in the Federal Capital Territory, focusing first on vulnerable areas such as Dutse, Lokogoma, and Lugbe, before extending to other states across the country.
This proactive move follows alarming findings by the government, which identified 1,249 communities in 176 local government areas across 30 states and the FCT as high risk zones for flooding between April and November this year.
Highlighting the urgency, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, had earlier named Lagos, Bayelsa, Kogi, Adamawa, and Rivers among the states expected to bear the brunt of rising flood levels, warning that climate change continues to escalate the frequency and severity of these disasters.
The sensitisation campaign aims to equip communities with life saving knowledge and strategies to minimise the impact of the anticipated floods.
