The Presidency has firmly dismissed widespread reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

Speculation flooded social media platforms early Monday, alleging that Yakubu had been removed and replaced by one Professor Bashiru Olamilekan in what was described as a major shakeup at the electoral commission.

However, the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, swiftly debunked the claims, urging Nigerians to ignore the false reports.

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra clarified in a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He further stressed that any legitimate announcement regarding the leadership of INEC would only come through official channels, particularly the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source,” he added, seeking to put an end to the growing misinformation.

The rumour, which spread like wildfire across various online platforms, has been confirmed as baseless, with no official confirmation from either the Presidency or any federal authority.
