The federal government has taken a bold step toward cleaner energy with the inauguration of a three million standard cubic feet Compressed Natural Gas plant in Ibesikpo, Akwa Ibom State.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources in charge of gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo, performed the groundbreaking ceremony over the weekend at the site of the Guelph Gas Limited Mother Station, marking a major stride in Nigeria’s drive toward energy transition.
Speaking at the event, Ekpo emphasised Nigeria’s determination to harness its abundant natural gas resources to fuel industrial growth and deliver an equitable shift to cleaner energy sources.
He described CNG as a vital alternative to traditional fuels, one that promises to lower carbon emissions while promoting a healthier environment for all Nigerians.
In a statement released in Abuja by Luis Ibah, media aide to the minister, Ekpo praised Guelph Gas Limited for its investment in the project, calling it a clear signal of rising investor confidence in Nigeria’s gas sector.
He credited government efforts to create an enabling environment as a catalyst for increasing private sector participation.
The minister pledged full support from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to ensure the success of the Akwa Ibom project and other similar ventures across the country.
He said these initiatives are designed to boost national revenue, spur economic development, and open up vast employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
Ekpo also commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for his steadfast commitment to supporting investments that drive growth and create jobs.
“As a proud son of this great state, I have witnessed the unwavering dedication of our people to progress and innovation.
“With its strategic location and wealth of resources, Akwa Ibom is poised to become a major hub in Nigeria’s unfolding gas revolution,” the minister declared.
Guelph Gas Limited’s Managing Director, Emmanuel Bassey, lauded President Bola Tinubu for his backing of progressive initiatives like the Gas to Prosperity programme and the Decade of Gas policy, noting that such support has been crucial in attracting investment and positioning Nigeria as a future energy leader.
