The Nigeria Police Force has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over the violent clash that erupted during the Eid el Fitr procession in Kano, claiming the life of a local vigilante.
The tragic incident unfolded as the Emir’s convoy moved from the Eid prayer ground to his palace, a journey traditionally marked by celebration but which turned deadly this year.
The clash led to the death of Surajo Rabiu, a member of the vigilante group, while another individual sustained injuries.
The police invitation, dated April 4, 2025, and signed by Commissioner of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department, directed the Emir to report at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 8, at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.
The move follows growing tension in Kano after the State Police Command banned the annual Durbar festival, citing security concerns.
The ban was imposed in a bid to forestall any outbreak of violence during the festive period.
Despite the prohibition, Emir Sanusi II’s motorcade processed through parts of the city on the third day of the Eid celebration, raising eyebrows amid fears of potential unrest.
In response to the incident, Kano State Police Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori has inaugurated an eight member Special Investigation Panel to unravel the circumstances surrounding the violence.
As of press time, there has been no official reaction from the Emir’s palace concerning the police invitation, leaving the public anticipating the next chapter in this unfolding drama.
