The Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation has launched a revolutionary drone-powered topographical mapping project aimed at transforming the way Nigeria gathers and uses geospatial data.

Unveiled at a workshop in Abuja by Surveyor General Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, the project leverages drone technology to capture over seventeen thousand images that will produce a high resolution, detailed map of the capital city. It is the first of its kind in Africa.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with PLACE, a United States based non profit, is expected to boost national security, enhance disaster response, support agriculture, and strengthen flood prediction systems.

“This is a game changer,” Adebomehin declared, stressing that effective information management drives progress.

He urged stakeholders to embrace the technology and collaborate to address humanitarian and development challenges.

Azeez Afeez, Head of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at OSGOF, said the use of digital twin technology would enable real time monitoring of movements and strengthen airport and border security.

He noted that digital representation of physical environments is essential for achieving smart city goals.

Waddah Hago, Geospatial Technology Lead at PLACE, explained that the partnership aims to provide reliable, hyperlocal imagery that bridges the gap between public needs and private capacity.

The landmark project signals a bold step into the future of urban planning and national development, setting Nigeria on course to lead in digital mapping across the continent.
