The Federal Ministry of Works has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos following hours of gridlock that left millions of commuters stranded on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, O. I. Kesha, said the Minister of Works, David Umahi, directed the reopening of the bridge to vehicular traffic.
“This directive follows the earlier closure of the bridge for planned maintenance and rehabilitation works,” Kesha stated.
He added that palliative measures are being implemented to ensure the bridge remains motorable.
The Ministry apologized for the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealed for public understanding, assuring that full repair works would be carried out at a later date.
