Dr Adesida Adewumi, a Consultant Family Physician, has highlighted the numerous health benefits of regular sexual activity, stating that it can enhance longevity, improve immunity, promote better sleep, and reduce stress.
Speaking in an interview in Abuja on Tuesday, Adewumi explained that couples who engage in frequent sex tend to live longer and enjoy better overall well-being compared to those who are less active.
He noted that regular sex lowers the risk of stroke and heart disease, alleviates body pain and headaches, and even helps prevent prostate and breast cancers.
“For men, ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly reduces the risk of prostate cancer,” Adewumi said, adding that sexual activity burns calories and helps with weight management when practiced at least three times a week.
Adewumi also emphasized the mental health benefits, explaining that regular sex reduces depression and anxiety, improves brain function, and enhances career productivity.
He pointed out that pregnant women who engage in sex more frequently experience easier labour and faster recovery after childbirth.
“Sex strengthens emotional bonds between couples, making them happier, more logical, and less irritable. It reduces loneliness, enhances intimacy, and even boosts memory,” he added.
The expert, however, cautioned that sexual activity should be within a committed relationship to prevent sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis.
Adewumi’s insights reinforce the physical, emotional, and psychological advantages of regular sex, highlighting its role in overall well-being.
