The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has warned of a surge in Cerebrospinal Meningitis cases, with 807 suspected infections and 74 deaths recorded across 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
NCDC Director General, Dr Jide Idris, revealed that Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto are the hardest hit, with Kebbi alone reporting 248 cases and 26 fatalities.
He attributed the rise to dry weather and overcrowding, stressing the need for early detection, vaccination, and public awareness.
To contain the outbreak, the NCDC has deployed Rapid Response Teams for mass vaccinations, case surveillance, and free treatment in affected areas.
Idris urged Nigerians to watch for symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck, and severe headaches, advising immediate medical attention.
He also called for improved hygiene, reduced overcrowding, and prompt reporting of suspected cases via the NCDC helpline at 6232.
