Stakeholders in the maritime and transport sectors have raised concerns over the slow progress of Nigeria’s railway system, citing lack of funding, inadequate rail coaches, and poor patronage as major challenges.

Speaking at a summit organized by the Nigerian Shippers Council in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, experts urged the Federal Government to revamp the railway system to facilitate cargo movement and boost economic growth.

The state chairman of the Nigerian Association of Customs Licensed Agents, Ifeanyi Isikaki, criticized the reliance on narrow gauge railways, arguing that they are incapable of handling heavy cargo.

He advised investors to continue using sea and road transport for now.

The Director of the South South Zonal Coordinating Office of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Agatha Ify Okolue, stressed that an efficient railway system would reduce road congestion and enhance the shipping industry.

She described rail transport as the backbone of industrialized nations and emphasized the need for investment in modern infrastructure.

Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Pius Akutah, represented by Director of Inland Transport Services, Mustaphar Zubairu, highlighted the council’s commitment to enhancing intermodal transport.

He revealed that a memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation is in place to improve cargo movement and ease road traffic.

The summit, held in Port Harcourt, drew participants from major port users, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Ports Authority, and licensed customs agencies.
