The Nigerian Senate has taken a bold step to strengthen the national identity management system by passing a bill that mandates the compulsory registration of all Nigerians.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central, seeks to repeal and reenact the National Identity Management Commission Act, establishing a more robust and efficient system for biometric data collection and identity verification.
With its passage, the bill paves the way for a centralized database that will streamline identity registration, enhance security measures, and ensure global-standard data protection.
Speaking on the bill, Senator Umeh emphasized its importance, stating that stakeholders widely supported it during the public hearing due to the need for a more comprehensive identity framework.
The legislation also grants the National Identity Management Commission greater authority to issue identity cards, regulate data collection, and collaborate with relevant agencies to combat identity fraud.
This move is expected to address challenges in identity verification, financial transactions, and national security, making identity management more efficient and reliable across the country.
