The Igbo community in the Federal Capital Territory has called on the Senate to sanction Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi over his heated exchange with former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili.

The clash occurred during a Senate Committee hearing on a petition filed against Senate President Godswill Akpabio on behalf of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan.

In a statement issued on Thursday, President General of the Igbo Community Association in FCT, Engr Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe, condemned Nwebonyi’s remarks, describing them as an insult to Ezekwesili and a stain on the dignity of the Senate.

He stressed that it was disturbing to see a senator publicly belittle a woman of Ezekwesili’s stature, especially in a discussion linked to allegations of sexual harassment against a female senator.

The association criticized the Senate for its perceived disregard for women’s rights, pointing out that the legislative body remains largely male dominated.

They insisted that Nwebonyi must tender a public apology to both Ezekwesili and the Igbo community, warning that failure to do so could spark protests.

Reaffirming their commitment to defending women’s rights in governance, the group urged the Senate to take firm action to uphold respect and accountability in political discourse.
