Labour unions in Rivers State have issued a stern warning to the federal government, threatening nationwide industrial action if the emergency rule imposed on the state is not reversed.

In a joint statement, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) condemned the measure, arguing that it has worsened economic hardship, particularly for local government workers who have yet to receive their salaries.

The unions also expressed concerns that the emergency rule has scared away potential investors, crippling the New Rivers Vision development agenda.

“While we support maintaining law and order, any action that suspends elected officials and undermines workers’ rights must align with the Nigerian Constitution,” the statement read.

Labour leaders Alex Agwanwor (NLC), Ikechukwu Onyefuru (TUC), and Chuku Emecheta (Joint Negotiation Council), called on President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the Judiciary to urgently lift the emergency rule and restore normalcy.

They warned that failure to act could force labour unions to take “strategic union actions” that may disrupt economic activities across the country.
