Veteran Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya has opened up about her painful past, revealing how years of domestic violence in her marriage led her into alcohol abuse.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Adesanya described a decade of emotional and physical torment, admitting she turned to alcohol to numb the pain.
“It was something I was involved in for ten good years. We had moments of laughter, but the beatings never stopped. The domestic violence was always there,” she said.
The actress disclosed that the constant abuse pushed her into depression, though she did not recognize it at the time. In a desperate attempt to cope, she resorted to heavy drinking.
“I was so depressed. I started drinking without even knowing why. I would sneak out to buy a bottle of brandy, go to a corner, and drink it all. I was drowning in alcohol just to escape the pain,” she confessed.
Adesanya’s story highlights the silent struggles victims of domestic violence endure and the harmful coping mechanisms they sometimes adopt.
Her testimony serves as a call for awareness and support for those suffering in silence.
