The National Assembly has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months.

The Senate and House of Representatives granted approval on Thursday after reviewing the President’s letter outlining the need for urgent intervention.

Lawmakers cited the prolonged political crisis, constitutional breaches, and escalating security threats in the oil rich state as reasons for the decision.

The House of Representatives also proposed a national mediation committee to reconcile the warring factions, with the possibility of lifting the emergency rule if peace is restored before the six month period ends.

Following a closed door session, both chambers adopted the motion through a voice vote, giving the President full authority to implement emergency measures in Rivers State.
