The Senate on Wednesday postponed its debate on President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, shifting discussions to Thursday.

The delay followed a late start to plenary, with many senators absent across party lines.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved to step down the motion, citing Senate rules, and was seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The motion highlighted rising insecurity in Rivers, including militant threats and pipeline vandalism, stressing the need for urgent measures.

The Senate requires a two-thirds majority, 73 out of 109 members, to approve the emergency rule.

President Tinubu declared the emergency on Tuesday night, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly for six months. He appointed Vice Admiral Ibok Etè Ibas as the sole administrator.
