The Rivers State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, blaming Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the political turmoil.
Speaker Martin Amaewhule, speaking on Wednesday March 19, 2025, accused Fubara of undermining the rule of law by disobeying court orders and obstructing legislative functions.
He argued that the governor’s actions left the President with no choice but to intervene.
The assembly, which remains loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, defended Tinubu’s decision to suspend Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all lawmakers while appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas as sole administrator.
The lawmakers assured full cooperation with the new leadership and called on residents to remain calm as the state transitions into emergency rule.
