A raging fire tore through a recycling facility and a bustling market in the Dakata area of Kano in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving properties worth billions of naira in ruins.
The inferno, which started around 4 a.m., was reportedly triggered by electrical sparks from nearby poles.
Witnesses said the flames quickly spread into the adjacent groundnut mill market, known for its trade in food items and provisions.
Newly appointed Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bakori, visited the scene and confirmed the arrest of a suspect caught attempting to loot during the chaos.
He assured residents that authorities would launch a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences.
Firefighters from the Kano State Fire Service and private emergency teams battled to contain the blaze, preventing further destruction.
Shocked traders and business owners watched helplessly as their livelihoods went up in flames.
Many have called on both state and federal authorities for urgent intervention to help them recover from the disaster.
