A suspected armed robber has died in the hospital after being rescued from a lynching attempt by an angry mob at Akerele Junction, Agege, Lagos State.
Confirming the incident, Lagos Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the suspect, notorious for snatching mobile phones from commuters, was caught and severely beaten by a mob on March 15 before police intervened.
“The mob fled upon sighting the police. The suspect, who had sustained critical injuries, was rushed to the hospital but later died,” Hundeyin stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased and his accomplices—still at large—stabbed a middle-aged woman before stealing her phone. The victim is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
The suspect’s body has been moved to the morgue, while the police have launched a manhunt for his accomplices and those involved in the jungle justice. Investigations are ongoing.
