FG to Penalize Owners of Empty Buildings

The Federal Government has declared its intention to impose financial penalties on owners of vacant buildings as part of efforts to tackle Nigeria’s housing deficit.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ahmed Musa Dangiwa revealed that property owners who fail to lease or sell their empty buildings may face increased ground rent.

He disclosed that a nationwide census of unoccupied properties is underway, with legal experts reviewing strategies for enforcement.

Dangiwa also issued a strong warning to contractors handling the Renewed Hope City housing projects, vowing to punish those delivering substandard work.

He stated that defaulters could face severe sanctions, including contract termination.

To ensure compliance and enhance housing quality, the government has deployed experts across the country for strict monitoring and enforcement.
