The Ijaw National Congress (INC), has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene after Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike allegedly described the Ijaw people as a “minority of minorities” in Rivers State and other South-South states, excluding Bayelsa.
In a statement issued Friday in Abuja, INC’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ezonebi Oyakemeagbegha, condemned Wike’s remarks, warning that they could disrupt regional harmony.
He urged the minister to focus on his official duties rather than making divisive comments.
The INC reaffirmed that the Ijaw are one of Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups, with over 40 million people, and hold significant historical and political influence.
It emphasized that the Ijaw dominate eight local government areas in Rivers State and are not a minority in Delta State.
While advocating for peace and unity, the INC insisted on fairness and equity in the Niger Delta, urging restraint from actions that could inflame ethnic tensions.
