The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has sounded the alarm over soaring temperatures across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Kogi, and other states, linking the extreme heat to climate change.
With temperatures hitting 40°C, NiMet warns that 2025 could surpass 2024 as the hottest year on record.
Prof. Vincent Weli, NiMet’s Director of Weather Services, explained that Abuja, Minna, and Lokoja share the same ecological zone, making them highly vulnerable to extreme heat.
To combat the crisis, he stressed the need to cut carbon emissions, adopt electric vehicles, solar power, and aggressive tree planting.
NiMet urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight from 12 PM to 3 PM, and embrace eco-friendly practices to lessen the impact of the heatwave.
