A suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis has claimed 26 lives in Kebbi State, affecting Aliero, Gwandu, and Jega local government areas, the state government confirmed on March 11, 2025.
Health officials warn that the highly contagious infection, which inflames the brain and spinal cord membranes, could spread further.
Symptoms include fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness, and vomiting, with fatal consequences if untreated.
In response, Sokoto State has issued health alerts, while security forces in Kebbi have ramped up tactical deployments following recent bandit attacks in the region. More updates on the outbreak are expected soon.
