The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to mandate internet service providers to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content across the country.

The resolution, passed on Tuesday, followed a motion by Dalhatu Tafoki, an APC lawmaker from Katsina State, who warned that cyber pornography was becoming a global crisis that Nigeria had failed to address adequately.

Tafoki emphasized that Nigeria, as a “highly religious country,” should not tolerate explicit content, citing the actions of several nations in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have outlawed pornography.

He also highlighted expert warnings on its psychological and social dangers, linking it to rising cases of addiction, prostitution, and moral decline.

The motion received overwhelming support when Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put it to a voice vote.

As part of the resolution, the House instructed the NCC to impose strict penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
