Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has spoken out on the Senate controversy, urging lawmakers to uphold the honour and dignity of the chamber.
Addressing journalists ahead of International Women’s Day, Tinubu refused to take sides in the heated dispute involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), who accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.
“The Senate is a place of maturity and respect. It should not be reduced to a battlefield,” she said, recalling her time as a senator.
The controversy erupted on February 20 when Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with Akpabio over seating arrangements, later alleging she faced intimidation for rejecting his alleged advances.
However, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed her petition, citing procedural gaps.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid growing public scrutiny, as Nigerians debate the unfolding power struggle within the upper legislative chamber.
