Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has been sidelined after tearing his calf muscle while celebrating during Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper limped off in the second half after Jamal Musiala’s second goal put Bayern 2-0 up.

Coach Vincent Kompany called the injury “a shame”, especially given the unusual circumstances.

Neuer, who recently extended his contract until 2025, had only returned from a year-long absence due to a skiing accident.

Jonas Urbig, 21, replaced him in goal, though he faced little challenge.

Bayern, currently eight points clear in the Bundesliga, will travel to Leverkusen for the return leg next week.
