The National Assembly was thrown into turmoil on Wednesday as protesters stormed its premises, demanding Senate President Godswill Akpabio step down over allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The demonstrators, made up of civil society groups and supporters of Akpoti-Uduaghan, arrived at the National Assembly complex as early as 8:00 a.m., chanting slogans and holding placards calling for accountability.
The protest erupted days after Akpoti-Uduaghan, in a live television interview, accused Akpabio of harassing her and attempting to punish her politically after she allegedly rejected his advances.
She cited the controversial February 20, 2025, seating arrangement change in the Senate as retaliation.
A spokesperson for the protesting groups insisted on a full investigation into the matter, stating:
“We are here to demand justice. No one is above the law, not even the Senate President.”
As of press time, Akpabio and the Senate leadership had yet to issue an official response. Security personnel maintained a strong presence at the protest, ensuring the demonstration remained peaceful.
