The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI) has vowed to enforce strict adherence to approved transport fare structures, warning operators against exploiting commuters.
P-CNGI Programme Director and Chief Executive, Michael Oluwagbemi, issued the warning on Monday in response to reports of non-compliance by transport operators benefiting from the CNG conversion scheme.
“We will sanction any operator violating the agreed fare structure,” he stated, emphasizing that no transport union should extort its members to access the programme.
The free CNG conversion initiative was introduced to ease fuel cost burdens by transitioning commercial vehicles from petrol and diesel to CNG.
However, Oluwagbemi condemned some transporters for maintaining high fares despite benefiting from the cost-saving scheme.
To ensure compliance, P-CNGI has launched the ’10 for 10 Initiative’, deploying field agents to commercial transport parks in Abuja and Lagos to enroll drivers for free conversions. Transporters found violating the initiative’s terms will face strict penalties.
Commercial drivers facing difficulties accessing the free conversion can report through the P-CNGI helpline at 07000000264.
Meanwhile, Oluwagbemi assured that efforts are underway to expand refueling infrastructure and establish more conversion centers, making CNG a more accessible and affordable alternative for public transport.
