The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has blamed a lack of “cash backing” for the delay in paying corps members the newly approved N77,000 minimum wage.

NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu confirmed on Monday that the agency is still awaiting the necessary funds.

The delay has triggered outrage among corps members and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

NANS National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Sileola Akinbodunse, slammed the NYSC for failing to implement the wage months after its approval in July 2024.

Despite assurances from the NYSC Director-General, corps members reportedly received only N33,000 for February instead of the promised N70,000.

Akinbodunse called the delay “a gross injustice,” highlighting that other government workers have started receiving the new wage.

NANS has demanded an investigation into the NYSC’s handling of the adjustment and urged the Federal Government to intervene, warning that withholding the approved wage could demoralize corps members amid rising economic hardship.
