Portland Gas Ltd has called on the Federal and Lagos State governments to provide financial backing for its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure expansion in Lagos.
Speaking at the launch of its Mobile CNG Refill Unit under the Presidential CNG Initiative in Ojota, Lagos, the company’s CEO, Folajimi Mohammed, emphasized the urgent need for funding due to the capital-intensive nature of the project.
He noted that the company is leveraging the nearby Accela Pipeline to enhance affordability.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
He disclosed plans to convert 10% of Lagos’ 400,000-vehicle fleet to CNG within three years, with 2,000 government vehicles transitioning by mid-2025.
Sanwo-Olu also announced that Lagos would establish 15 CNG refueling stations by the end of the year and urged transport operators and investors to support the transition, positioning Lagos as a leader in Nigeria’s energy shift.
Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, highlighted that adopting CNG would significantly cut transportation costs and improve air quality.
