The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, has urged the subregional bloc to uphold its reputation as a model of regional integration in Africa, despite its ongoing challenges.
Speaking at a retirement ceremony for ECOWAS staff in Abuja, Touray highlighted the organization’s achievements in free movement, intra-regional trade, power supply, and infrastructure development.
He credited these successes to the dedication of its workforce, including those retiring.
“We have come a long way, and I believe we can continue to keep ECOWAS as a beacon of integration on the continent,” Touray stated.
He acknowledged that financial constraints had once hindered progress but noted that ECOWAS leaders had taken steps to address these issues.
While recognizing the challenges facing the community, Touray called for a broader perspective, stressing that regional issues reflect global realities.
“These challenges are surmountable, and I am confident that, together, we can overcome them,” he said.
Touray’s remarks underscored the importance of unity and resilience in ensuring ECOWAS remains a driving force for regional development.
