The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently appoint a substantive Auditor-General for the FCT Area Councils, citing legal provisions that mandate the position.

The resolution followed concerns raised during a Public Accounts Committee hearing, where lawmakers noted that the absence of an Auditor-General has stalled the submission of audited financial reports.

Committee Chairman Bamidele Salam emphasized the need for intervention, suggesting a formal request to Wike for an explanation.

The motion, moved by Obordor Mitema (PDP, Bayelsa), and seconded by Usman Bala, highlighted key infractions, including the non-submission of financial reports from 2023-2024 and the failure to remit pension deductions.

A five-member subcommittee, led by Tochukwu Okere, has been tasked with investigating the issue and making recommendations.

Top officials, including Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairman Christopher Maikalangu and Bwari Area Council Chairman John Gabaya, attended the hearing.
