The maiden edition of the Abuja Interior and Furniture Virtual Expo has sparked calls for the inclusion of Furniture Manufacturing as a degree course in Nigerian universities.

Speaking at the event, held over the weekend in the Federal Capital Territory, the Project Coordinator, Faisal Rafindadi, urged the National Universities Commission (NUC), to introduce undergraduate, master’s, and PhD programs in the field.

According to Rafindadi, this move would equip local professionals with the skills needed to compete globally, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported furniture, and boost economic growth.

“Nigeria’s furniture industry faces stiff competition from foreign products. By developing local talent through specialized degree programs, we can manufacture high-quality furniture that meets international standards,” he said.

Organized in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, the expo provided a platform for industry experts, manufacturers, and enthusiasts to network and explore the latest trends in interior design and furniture.

Dr. Kabir Mustapha, Director of Contact and Mobilization for the event, highlighted its alignment with the federal government’s digital economy agenda.

“As the first of its kind, this expo showcases our commitment to leveraging technology for growth and innovation in the sector,” he noted.

The event featured virtual exhibition booths, keynote sessions, and interactive workshops, reinforcing the push for a structured educational framework to sustain and expand Nigeria’s furniture industry.
