The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is set to upgrade its waste management system with the introduction of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), compactors, aimed at enhancing efficiency and promoting eco-friendly operations.
LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, stating that the new compactors are not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.
“This year, we will be bringing in 100 compactors, and by next year, we’ll double that. Our five-year plan is to completely upgrade the waste collection fleet in Lagos,” Gbadegesin said, adding that the trucks could also run on biogas generated from organic waste.
In collaboration with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and backed by the Swedish Government, LAWMA has completed a feasibility study to further improve waste management.
Gbadegesin noted that from the next quarter, LAMATA plans to introduce about 2,000 CNG/biogas-powered fleets, which will be made available to Private Sector Partnership (PSP), operators to strengthen waste collection and disposal across the state.
