In a move towards sustainable energy, Nigeria and China have signed a €7.6 billion green hydrogen agreement aimed at accelerating the nation’s shift from fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives.
The deal, sealed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, brings together the Federal Government, APPL Hydrogen Limited (AHL), and Chinese energy giant LONGi Green Energy Technology Company Limited (LGETCL).
The agreement will see the establishment of a green hydrogen project within the Liberty Free Trade Zone in Ibeno Local Government Area.
Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, who signed on behalf of Nigeria, described the project as a major leap toward industrialization and technological growth.
“This initiative positions Nigeria at the forefront of global green energy innovation,” Nnaji stated, highlighting the project’s potential to drive job creation, attract foreign investment, and solidify Nigeria’s presence in the global energy market.
Idara Ekpo, Chief Visionary Officer of AHL, revealed that the project aims to produce 1.2 million metric tons of green methanol annually for export, alongside medical oxygen and food-grade carbon dioxide.
LONGi’s Vice President for Europe, Francois Cui, emphasized the importance of international partnerships in combating climate change and advancing clean energy solutions.
Alhaji Bamanga Usman Jada, Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority, hailed the project as a game-changer for economic diversification, technology transfer, and massive job creation.
With collaboration from 11 international partners, this deal signals a major step forward in Nigeria’s clean energy journey.
