The Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, has condemned the escalating violence in Osun State, warning that it threatens the state’s reputation as a peaceful haven.

During a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at his palace, Baxter expressed deep concern over the destruction of lives and property for political reasons.

He urged the Ooni to take proactive steps to restore peace and stability, emphasizing that political violence undermines governance and development.

His visit, detailed in a press release by the Ooni’s Palace spokesperson, Moses Olafare, highlighted the long-standing ties between Britain and Ile-Ife.

Baxter likened the historical significance of the House of Oduduwa to that of Buckingham Palace, recalling the strong diplomatic relationship established by past Oonis, including Adesoji Aderemi and Okunade Sijuwade.

He urged the Ooni to uphold and strengthen these bonds.

In his response, Ooni Ogunwusi strongly denounced the political unrest, calling on all actors to prioritize Osun’s well-being over personal ambitions.

“No individual is greater than the state,” he declared, pledging that traditional rulers across Osun are actively working to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.

The visit also coincided with the formal reception of the newly installed Elerin of Erin-Ile, Oba Jimoh Adesoye, who expressed gratitude for the Ooni’s support.

The gathering was attended by prominent dignitaries, including the Obalufe of Ife and other high-ranking chiefs.
