The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to appoint at least six additional mandate secretaries to enhance governance in the nation’s capital.

The resolution, passed on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, followed a motion by Joshua Obika, representing the Abuja Municipal/Bwari Federal Constituency.

Obika argued that the current eight mandate secretaries are inadequate for the FCT’s expanding administrative needs, stressing that the capital should be treated as a state with fair representation from its Area Councils, in line with Section 299 (1) (b) of the 1999 Constitution.

The lawmakers urged Wike to ensure that each of the six Area Councils has a representative in the administration.

They also called on President Bola Tinubu to guarantee that the appointees are FCT residents with local knowledge, ensuring effective and inclusive governance.
