The Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED), has urged the National Assembly to grant full statehood to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, making it Nigeria’s 37th state.

At a press conference in Abuja, CHRICED’s Executive Director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, decried the political and economic marginalization of the FCT’s original inhabitants, citing land dispossession and lack of representation.

He argued that Abuja’s current status denies its residents the rights enjoyed by other states.

The group called for constitutional amendments to address these issues and strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure.
