Residents of Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have expressed growing concerns over the activities of suspected fraudsters posing as “money doublers” in the area.

The group, often dressed in black suits to appear professional, lures unsuspecting victims with promises of multiplying their money in exchange for registration fees.

They are frequently spotted around Radio House, Old and New Kutunku, and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, using persuasive tactics and laptops to convince people to invest.

According to residents, the group rents apartments in the area, with over 20 members living together and operating daily.

Suleiman Ibrahim, a resident of New Kutunku, described their strategy: “They move around like bankers, using laptops to register people and promise to double their money within days.”

Another resident, Muazu Ishaq, noted that the group, mostly young men aged 22 to 25, often prays at local mosques before resuming their activities.

Several individuals have fallen victim to the scam. Mrs. Gladys Danjuma, a resident of New Kutunku, revealed that two of her neighbors lost ₦170,000 each after being deceived with promises of quick returns.

“They use charms to manipulate people,” she alleged.

Law enforcement has begun cracking down on the syndicate.

In late January 2025, police operatives arrested six members during a raid in Gwagwalada.

Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 7, Benneth Igweh, confirmed the arrests, stating that a laptop and mercury were recovered from the suspects.

“They tricked victims into handing over money with false promises of doubling it. It was all a scam,” Igweh said.

Residents are urging authorities to intensify efforts to dismantle the syndicate and prevent further exploitation of vulnerable individuals in the community.
