MTN Nigeria has increased its data tariffs, triggering widespread dissatisfaction among subscribers.
The revised plans, which took effect recently, offer reduced data volumes at the same prices, leaving many customers frustrated.
Under the new pricing structure, the ₦1,000 data plan now provides only 1GB instead of the previous 1.5GB, while the ₦2,000 plan has been reduced from 3.5GB to 2GB.
The changes have sparked an outcry on social media, with many users threatening to switch to other networks.
“This is unacceptable,” tweeted @Olaoluwa. “MTN is exploiting customers. I’m porting to Glo ASAP.” Another user, @Blessing, lamented, “I just recharged ₦1,000 only to discover my data volume has been slashed. This is unfair.”
MTN is yet to issue an official statement on the tariff adjustment. However, industry sources suggest the increase is due to rising operational costs. Customers, however, argue that the telecom giant should explore alternative cost-cutting measures rather than shifting the burden onto users.
The move has raised concerns about internet affordability in Nigeria, particularly for low-income earners who rely on mobile data for connectivity.
As pressure mounts, subscribers are eagerly waiting to see if MTN will reconsider its pricing strategy.
