The Enugu State Police Command has denied allegations that officers tortured Nnaemeka Ugwu, a patent medicine dealer, leading to his death at the Nsukka Area Command.
In a statement on Tuesday, police said Ugwu collapsed while trying to secure his wife’s release from detention and was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Family members had accused the police of harassment and torture, citing a viral video, but police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe dismissed the claims as misleading, insisting Ugwu was neither arrested nor tortured.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered an investigation into the incident while urging the public to remain calm and follow proper channels for grievances.
