Nigeria has recorded a major breakthrough in military technology with the Tsaigumi Tactical UAV, the country’s first indigenous military-grade Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)—designed by Lieutenant Nkemdilim Anulika Ofodile of the Nigerian Air Force.
Unveiled in 2018 through a collaboration between NAF and UAVision, a Portuguese defense firm, the Tsaigumi UAV is built for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, boosting Nigeria’s defense capabilities on land and sea.
A PhD holder in Control Engineering from the University of Leicester, UK, Lt. Ofodile’s expertise in avionic systems played a crucial role in the drone’s success, marking her as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s aerospace industry.
Her achievement underscores Nigeria’s growing self-reliance in military technology while inspiring more women to break barriers in STEM and defense innovation.
