The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), has urged the National Assembly to create five additional states to address regional disparities and promote equity across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
In a statement on Sunday, CNPP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, emphasized that fairness and justice in resource distribution are fundamental to national unity and stability.
“Democracy thrives on equity. The current imbalance in state distribution must be corrected to foster national development,” the statement read.
CNPP proposed that each geopolitical zone should have seven states, noting that while the North Central and North West already meet this threshold, the South East lags with only five states.
The group recommended one new state each for the South West, North East, and South-South, while the South East should receive two.
“This move will ensure equal opportunities for all regions to contribute to national growth,” CNPP stated, urging lawmakers to act swiftly in the interest of justice and national cohesion.
