The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted claims that the Junior and Senior Secondary School system has been scrapped, clarifying that Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa only proposed a transition to a 12-year basic education system, which remains under review.

In a statement by Director of Press Folasade Boriowo, the ministry emphasized that the proposal, discussed at the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE), meeting on February 6, 2025, is not an immediate policy change.

It aims to establish 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the existing 6-3-3 structure.

A key aspect of the plan includes eliminating external exams between Junior and Senior Secondary School to allow seamless progression.

However, the ministry stressed that extensive consultations with stakeholders, including state governments, educators, and parents, will take place over the next eight months before a final decision at the NCE meeting in October 2025.

The ministry urged the public to disregard misinformation, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing access to quality education in line with global best practices.
