Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has approved over N1.2 billion to cover examination fees for students in public schools, reinforcing the state’s commitment to accessible education.
Commissioner for Education Wemi Jones announced the initiative at a press conference in Lokoja, revealing that N542.4 million will be used to fund the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Basic Six and Common Entrance Examinations, and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Additionally, N661.3 million has been allocated for the 2024/2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Jones highlighted the initiative’s impact, noting an 18 percent increase in student enrolment due to free examination fees. He emphasized that the policy, introduced by former Governor Yahaya Bello, aligns with the state’s mandate to provide free exam registration for public school students.
The commissioner urged school administrators to ensure a smooth registration process and warned against any attempts to exploit students.
He commended Governor Ododo’s dedication to education as a tool for poverty reduction and social development.
This financial intervention underscores Kogi State’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and reducing barriers to education.
