The Nigerian Senate has condemned revenue-generating agencies for failing to respond to queries raised in the Auditor General’s report, particularly regarding billions of naira unaccounted for in government coffers.
Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), for ignoring multiple summonses to clarify financial irregularities.
Highlighting concerns over the CBN’s handling of the Ways and Means scheme, Wadada revealed that improper interest charges had pushed the nation’s debt beyond ₦30 trillion, with an additional ₦6 trillion in questionable fees.
The Senate warned that continued non-compliance could prompt direct intervention from President Bola Tinubu, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in public finance management.
