The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened trial against former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe, over allegations of diverting N868.5 million from the Federal Ministry of Defence.

At the Federal High Court in Abuja, two prosecution witnesses testified on how Anamekwe, as Director of Finance and Accounts (2019–2021), allegedly used multiple bank accounts to siphon funds.

A bank official detailed how accounts were opened for contractors, while a former deputy director under Anamekwe confirmed that cash withdrawals were made and handed over to him.

Anamekwe, who briefly served as acting Accountant-General in 2022, was initially in plea bargain talks with the EFCC, but negotiations collapsed.

The trial continues on February 26 and March 5.
