The Federal Government has announced plans to establish at least 150 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling stations by the end of 2025.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of five mini-LNG plants in Kogi, the Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, highlighted efforts to expand Nigeria’s gas infrastructure. He noted that the initiative aims to attract billions in investment while addressing gas accessibility challenges, especially in the Northeast and Northwest.
Oluwagbemi revealed that President Bola Tinubu has set a target to convert one million vehicles to CNG by 2027. He also stated that Nigeria’s CNG compression capacity increased by 2,500% in one year, with conversion centers rising from seven in 2023 to 193 by the end of 2024.
In 2024, the sector attracted $470 million in investments, with projections to double this figure in 2025. The government also plans to establish at least 500 conversion centers by year-end.
Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, described the expansion of LNG infrastructure as a transformative move for Nigeria’s energy sector, citing its economic and environmental benefits.
