President Donald Trump has suspended U.S. funding for HIV/AIDS programs in Nigeria and other developing nations under a new executive order.
The freeze affects the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a $6.5 billion initiative supporting millions globally with treatment, prevention, and care.
The suspension, which could last several months, halts funding disbursements and puts Nigeria—one of the countries hardest hit by HIV—at risk of significant setbacks in its national HIV response.
PEPFAR has contributed over $6 billion to Nigeria’s efforts to combat the epidemic.
Hopes for a resolution may hinge on the stance of Marco Rubio, a supporter of PEPFAR, as he assumes the role of Secretary of State.
However, prolonged delays could leave millions without access to essential healthcare and medication.
