Former President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he sustains himself financially by renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State, emphasizing that he did not enrich himself corruptly during his tenure as Nigeria’s president.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC), caucus meeting in Katsina State ahead of the state’s local council elections scheduled for February 15, Buhari highlighted the complexities of governing Nigeria and urged leaders to prioritize transparency and accountability.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. Until you find yourself in leadership, you won’t understand its complexities,” he said in Hausa.
Reflecting on his post-presidency life, Buhari noted, “I look much healthier now than when I was president. Anyone who sees me acknowledges this.”
Buhari stated that he owns only three houses — one in Daura and two in Kaduna — and disclosed that he relies on income from renting one of the Kaduna properties to cover his feeding expenses.
He asserted that his record remains untainted, adding, “Nobody can accuse me of illicit enrichment while in office.”
The former president concluded by urging Nigerian leaders to uphold accountability and transparency in governance.
